$5 chip sells for record $33K. on eBay
By JOE WEINERT Press of Atlantic City Staff Writer
A casino chip that someone once bought for $5 sold on eBay last weekend for a record $33,000.
Sands Las Vegas issued the chip in the early 1950s. It depicts arrows, dice and a desert scene with the phrase "A Place in the Sun."
Only five such chips are known to exist, said Len Cipkins, publicity director for the Casino Chip and Gaming Token Collectors Club of Las Vegas.
"Sands Las Vegas casino chips and memorabilia are highly coveted by collectors and noncollectors because of their association with the legendary entertainers who performed there, particularly the Rat Pack," said club President Mike Skelton.
The previous record for a casino chip offered at public sale, also on eBay, was $15,100 for unique $5 Hacienda chip, Cipkins said.
