I think some of the solutions were good, but if you just come out with the truth and let things work themselves out, I'd say that over the long haul, you'll still get 30K out of the chips - or close enough.
Les Lawrence bought a bunch of "rare" chips - the seller said that was all there was. Naturally after Les bought them, the seller "found" another couple of boxes of each denomination.
He offered refunds to people that bought them before he found out and refuned a large part of the purchase price to those that opted to keep the sets!
How's that for ethics - he had absolutely no obligation, legally, or ethically to do what he did.
How many here can say they would do what Les did?
