You could go to the cage if you have something specific that you want. Also, it has been said that for good customers some casinos will look the other way when they come in with a couple chips from other casinos. Normally they will refuse them but sometimes they will except them "For Play" and will set them asside to be destroyed or in some cases swapped back to the original establishment. Sometimes if a collector asks about "Foriegn Chips" you might find a cashier who will see if there are some good items in the Foriegn and Outdated racks, boxes or whatever.
Personally, I came to a decision a long time ago that I can't afford to have everything that comes along. I also can't afford all the nice chips that I would like. So, I try and get what I can from dealers who I have done business with, Some from eBay, and when in Las Vegas or other casinos I will usually pick up what I want from playing. Personally I find that more fun. You might be surprised how many LE and other special chips will find their ways, eventually, onto a table. While playing blackjack I will keep an eye out for odd chips. It then adds another dimension to the games when you see one pop up and you watch it go from player to player and you get lucky and snatch it from a payout. I take these chips up to my room and lightly wash them with hand soap, rinse and dry them. I have picked up many Poker Tournement chips from The Orleans as well as y2k chips this way. I have also found special chips playing at Golden Nugget, Luxor and Aladdin, I think it was. Sometimes casinos will have a display case of current special chips (Harrahs and RIO(?)) that are available or posters and signage of LE Releases that are coming up. If one is available when I am there I might go to the cage and ask for anything that might be available or wait in line with others. I went to Palms last year but they didn't have anything. They were releasing a chip that night or the next day but my flight was leaving and I couldn't wait for any. Too bad though. I had just won a good hit on a slot and had the extra cash. Good thing, for me, was the release was one that I didn't really care that much for anyways. Not to say that Palms chips are bad, Most of them are great. I am just of an age where some of them don't quite strike my interests. At Hard Rock, I was tersely told that they don't have any, by a rude cashier. At Luxor, a friend and I went to the cage inquiring about the tokens that he had gotten playing blackjack. He thought his kids would get a kick out of them. He wasn't a collector himself. I told him there was a set of them of various designs. When we approached the cashier she politely explained the different tokens and went through her rack to find him, and me, complete sets in decent conditions.
