to viruses and worms if it is plugged in and running AND you're not running updated anti-virus software when you get hit by one.

Also, if you don't have the data on the external HD backed up somewhere else (such as a CD-R, DVD-R, etc.) if it would happen to crash, all your data goes bye bye.
