... scrimshaw, but "reworked" chips; especially those having their fields ground away for their new homes.
Here, in South Florida (where most of the Uruguay material first surfaced), we have inspected and cherry picked through thousands of pieces to notice that most are badly worn. I've seen many pieces where the "F" (French franc) could still be read in the field... along with other pieces having their original serial numbers either ground away or left in place, but being upside-down in relation to their new denom/design/monogram... and then new pigment added.
