From 1850 to 1900, Virginia City was the most important city in the U.S. betweem Chicago and San Francisco. The silver mines provided much wealth to the nation and helped finance the country. Mark Twain got his start in Virginia City as the editor of the local newspaper. Incredible history in this place, well worth a visit. Just be prepared that the main industry in town is now tourism.
