Re: Dice storage question.
In Response To: Re: Dice storage question. ()

I haven't really gotten into collecting dice. I pick up some when I go to Vegas and have a bunch laying around but not really in an organized collection. Seeing all the cool looking dice available on eBay when I search through from time to time, I have been thinking of starting an organized collection. I am a bit ignorant of the specifics with dice and am interested in knowing more.

I was wondering from what I was reading, You, and others, mention some of the materials in question. As a photographer I am a little familiar with Celulose Nitrate and some other substances that old films were made of. Cellulose Nitrate for one was flamable and is the cause for the loss of many old films. The material gets very unstable and when exposed to heat, ie., the heat of a projector bulb, it can burst into flames. Films haven't been made of this material in many many years. Maybe close to 80 to 100 years. Animation Cells were also made of this material and thus when a really old Mickey Mouse cell is available it can be worth a fortune in good shape due to the fact that so few have survived.

Back to dice now. In relation to the problems that are discribed with some substances in the manufacture of dice, are some of these materials being used today or are people referring to old antique dice that are vulnerable? What are modern dice made of and are there special concerns that we should take for our storage of NEW dice?

I think this is important to know before a lot of people freak out about the stabiity of their collections of modern dice.

Thanks for all help and information.
