Mark attributes Oregon's lack of card rooms, as I understand it, to:
"the attitude of the elitist bluenose Democrats that rule Oregon and Washington"
As they used to say on Fibber Magee & Molly, " that's pretty good son, but that ain't the way I heard it." And, it ain't the way it is!!
Republicans control the Washington legislature and it is Republicans (of unknown nose color) who
consistently oppose any expansion of gaming north of the Columbia in their misguided effort to protect the ignorant masses from themselves. The recent effort to allow card rooms to have limited numbers of slot machines to even the balance with the tribal casinos is a perfect example. Every Republican pol in the state came out against it and, guess what, it failed.
And where, might I ask, does he get the idea that Democrats, "really don't like Indians or gambling casinos." I'm not suggesting that there aren't people in Olympia (and probably in Salem, too) who are racially prejudiced against the tribes but I strongly dispute that that prejudice is limited to Democrats.
The real point of this article is that the state of Oregon is losing lots and lots of money because it prohibits private card rooms. With the fiscal crisis that exists there, maybe someone will wake up.
