On September 23, 1999, a 747-438 (VH-OJH) landed long on a rain slick runway in Bangkok, Thailand and slid off the end of the runway with 407 souls aboard ending up in the middle of a golf course.
The repair was so costly that supposedly Qantas would have been money ahead to write the plane off as a hull loss and replace it with a new one. But by rebuilding the plane, it allowed Qantas to maintain their claim that "We have never lost an airplane"!
Just a interesting little story IMHO!
Cheers!
Bill
