WSOP Chip Question.

I've got a question on Binion's WSOP chips, maybe someone can answer this for me. I've repeatedly seen two kinds of chips sold as WSOP chips from actual tournament play. One group has a silver, coin-like center with the words "WSOP - 500 buy in - no cash value" and the year (like "2002") printed on them. These look slightly different for each year. The others are high-denomination Binion's chips (like $5,000 and $10,000) with no year printed on them. The ones I've seen are blue for $5,000, red for $10,000. I've been told by one person who played in the WSOP that the "500 buy in" chips were NOT used in tournament play, but were given out as comps to be used as credit toward the $10,000 buy-in (so with 20 of these chips you could buy your way into the tournament). This person says that the high-denomination ones with no year printed on them are the REAL chips used in the actual tournament. I also wonder, however, if the "500 buy-in" chips are from satellites or other, lower buy-in events at the WSOP (as opposed to the $10,000 main event). Does anyone know the story with these chips? Any info appreciated.
