Interesting story on this coin. A coin seller friend of mine stopped over my house this past Saturday and bought most of my loose Morgans (about 450 or so). When we got to the 1889-cc I asked for $600. When he refused I lowered my price to $500. Still too high. I then told him that I would throw it on ebay.
I put the coin on ebay for $1. Within a half hour I got an email offering $475 only IF it grades a VF. I was a bit annoyed since I had made it clear in my auction that there are no returns. I did scan at 200 DPI. If you want it bid, if not pass it by. He then raised his offer to a final $550 shipping included.
At that point I figured it paid to check past auctions. I spotted a not as good coin that sold for $735. At that point I email the guy and told him I would take $700 plus shipping.
He told me good luck. It was too pricey for him.
Well, after one day the current bid is $1126.
In retrospect I think I should have started the auction for at least $2.
