You're on to something, Jim. College football should adopt the practice now being used in some California pee wee baseball leagues -- play the games without even keeping score. That would enable everyone to enjoy the games for the pure athletic performance without the risk of "hysteria" when something unexpected happens ...

... like Cal beating USC 34-31 in triple overtime, which did create "hysteria", as the normally uninvolved Cal fans (generally more concerned about mundane academic matters) stormed the field, mobbed the team and celebrated well into the night after what was the second most exciting event in Cal football history (after only "The Play" against Stanfurd in 1981)!
