Just MAYBE the fans that follow the teams for one? The "fans" only want to satisfy their own ego. Without a "National Champion" the fans of every Leage Champion could run around with their index finger in the air chanting "we're number 1".

You have never played any sports at all, have you? Actually, I had a modicum of success as a high school footballer. Our team was League Champs. That was before the State Championship tournaments, so we just had to settle with being undefeated. I also was selected to the State High School Allstar team and was recruited by both the UW & WSC (remember, this was the 50's). I didn't think I was athleticly gifted enough or smart enough to devote the necessary effort to football and still get a degree in engineering, so I opted for the academics. Sorry to disapoint you.
