Some of the early match collectors felt the striker was ugly and unnecessary on the match cover. They cut them off.... bobbed the cover's tail, so to speak. Many match collectors today don't like bobtailed covers and won't collect them.

I prefer my casino matches to be complete with strikers (and matches too), but sometimes we have to take what is there in the case of these very old matches.
