Hey - someone actually checked some sources - way to go Pete.
However, the latest version of this BBS software does support user names and passwords in addition to making an IP visible only to the admin/mods.
I got this from their web site today:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
$RequireEmail: If you set this variable to 1, anyone attempting to create a profile will be required to provide a valid e-mail address.
(The script will generate a random password, and e-mail it to the address provided.) Users will not be able to change the address later or delete the profile, and of course won't be able to post messages under the user name attached to the profile without the password provided by the script.
WEBBBS SECURITY
Though WebBBS does not yet directly incorporate password protection, it works quite well with server-based protection. All you need to do is locate your configuration file in a password-protected directory. And if your security system sets the "REMOTE_USER" environment variable, as most do, you can even set WebBBS to require that users post under their login IDs, thus preventing them from posting under someone else's name.
$DisplayIPs: If this variable is set to 1, posters' IP addresses or domain names, as determined by the setting of $ResolveIPs, will be
displayed (when the index listing or message files are viewed) along with their names and e-mail addresses. (Note that they will be recorded in the message files for the administrator's reference, regardless of whether or not they're actually displayed to visitors.)
$ShowPosterIP: If you set this variable to 1, whenever a visitor posts a message, the "thanks for posting" message will display his IP address
and host domain. This can serve as a subtle reminder to potential troublemakers that they aren't really anonymous, but is *not* likely
to annoy legitimate posters and visitors, as displaying IP addresses on the index page might.

Plenty of options - so it's not true the "aren't option." They are options that have been rejected, if they were ever considered at all.
Thanks again . . . .
