I hope all is well with you!
I've stayed at the host hotel on some occasions and I've stayed at other hotels on other occasions. When the Paris LV offered to comp a room on the 18th floor overlooking the Bellagio fountains one year, I had to take it!
I'm also one who likes to check out different places to stay when I visit Las Vegas. When I stayed at Binion's last month, it was the 17th different Las Vegas casino/hotel that I've parked my carcass for a few nights. The Riviera is not one of the 17, so I definitely will be staying there this year, and I will book it specifying that it be in conjunction with the convention to be a part of the club room block.
One thing I was wondering about. Usually when I stay at a property that hasn't sent me an invitation with a special rate or even a full RFB, I ask the clerk when checking out of the hotel to summon a casino host to review my play during the stay and adjust my hotel bill. Do you or Jim have any feel for the Riviera making such adjustments for those booking rooms at the convention rate? Just asking for a host to review my play got a $380 bill at the Paris reduced to $33 on my first visit there and doing the same at my first stay at the Aladdin knocked $350 off of a $510 bill. ...sometimes it pays to ask!
