You might have found us at Humpin Hanna's, Someplace Else, My Place, or rock clubs that featured bands with original music. Usually just called Zander.
The guitar players decided to take things to a higher level, (changed name to Hurricane Express) so I was out, and got a job playing in a wedding band. (twice the pay, half the effort, free beer and cake...) No booking agent, musicians union or bar managers to deal with.
Back with the same guys again early 80's as Rocket, then Cafe', then Cafe' Rock, and finally as "Big Daddy" (not the famous singing guys). It was a matter of, you're in the band, you're out of the band, you're in the band... as needed or personalities and conflicts with other drummers flared up.
Finally a few years ago, the guitar player decided to "take things to a higher level" (sound familiar, and it's 20 years later ) Two of the guys started their own bands, the other has kicked back to do fill in work, I show up and jam now and then.
With all that free time on weekends I took up working at sportscar races as a "race official". So far I figure I'm doing about as well working as a free volunteer as I was "paid" playing in a rock band. It's less expensive for equipment, I have my nights free, and I get free lunch, dinner and beverages. (the free beer part hasn't changed a bit) and I actually have had something that resembles a social life a couple of times.
Still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up...
