I finally had to bite the bullet and change scanners. The old HP 5300C just did not scan well on Roulettes and Bud jones (any Plastic). I tried to find the Canoscan 5000 Gregg suggested but could not. I settled for another HP Scanjet 3970 and it works fine on everything ($99)May not be everyone's solution, but it worked for me.
