Vermillion is a bright red color. The original vermillion pigment in the middle ages was made from mecruric oxide, a very pretty red but rather on the toxic side. Exspensive sealing wax was colored with it. The poorer people had to use the non toxic cheap stuff colored with lamp black (carbon)
