I like your 5 minute idea. I think that if any bid comes in within the last 5 minutes, the auction should keep extending until 5 minutes passed with no bids.

With that said, I must admit that I used a snipe program quite extensively on eBay for awhile and I personally feel that I saved a LOT of money with it!
