When placing a snipe bid, we're always aware that there will probably be other snipers too. Therefore, this is a semi-regular occurance at our house:
My husband types in a bid on an auction...for the sake of the example, let's say it's a first issue Sahara ashtray with a sphinx....
husband: types in a bid of $1000.23
me: GASP!!! No, no, no...I DON'T want to pay $1000 for it!!!! I don't want to pay more than $500!
husband: You won't get it for $500.
me: I can live without it! Don't bid $1000!
husband: We won't have to pay $1000, are you watching the time?
me: Then don't bid $1000! (while wondering if I should "accidently" mess up the timing)
husband: I want it...just tell me when to bid.
me: 5 seconds, 2 seconds, NOW!
The mail indicator beeps, letting us know that the bid was received....but did we win? I squeeze my eyes shut, and peek through my fingers....we won, the auction closed at $700+. The first word in the email from the seller was "WOW!"
I'm sure we're not the only snipers who bid higher than our maximum should be, knowing we won't have a second chance to decide what our max really is!
