Robert,
Of course, you are correct. My example was just to make a point that one could find anothers high bid and stop bidding. This was happening to me when I had to leave a high proxy bid because I was going to be gone when the auction ended. Nothing wrong with that, I figured that it was what I would pay for the item. But, let's get beat by a legitimate bidder, sniper or otherwise, that actually wants to win the auction.
What was happening to me with "Mr. Too Much Time On His Hands" was this. He would bid until he knew exactly where my bid was and quit. He had no intention of being the high bidder, just wanted to make sure I paid the price. Well, I have no problem with paying for the item, but when someone maliciously bids you up to your high bid, with no intent of winning the auction you begin to look for countermeasures to stop that crap.
If he had wanted to win the auction, he knew exactly what he had to bid to top my bid. This never happened, auction after auction.
How, did this help me??? Sniping solved the problem. Then combined with actually bidding several times, with what I call stutter bids, you can set a person up to win the auction. It's all just a game. Some play it better than others.
