I think on items starting at .99 or less the bid increment is $.25. Then goes to .50 over $10.00. The increment keeps getting bigger as the bid price goes up. Eventually up to $50.00 on real high bid items. Probably, even higher yet.

So say, I have $62.77 bid on an item and the bid increment at this level is $1.00 and the current bid is $22.50. All one has to do is keep bidding until you have been outbid at $62.50 and the current bid is $62.77. At that point you know my proxy bid is $62.77 because of the .27 difference rather than an even dollar amount.

Now, you smile smugly and know you have made sure I have paid my high bid.
