I dont think the chip was ever obsolete. I get them regularly and have done since they opened.

Minimum bet on 'even money' roulette is still only £1 on the £1 table during 'quiet times'(most places are £5). If zero comes in you lose 1/2 your stake and thats what the 50p is needed for.
