I think that too many of us rely on The Chip Rack for value and many people take it as gospel. I have found in watching eBay that many chips sell for a small fraction of catalog. The Chip Rack is a good resource as a gauge to relative scarcity. That must always be kept in mind. It is just one opinion dealing with the big pictue. Perhaps The Chip Rack does not go far enough in dealing with the subject of what happened to all of those old chips. A simple coded letter system could be used. Such as "A" for destroyed, etc. These are my thoughts only, for whatever they are worth.
