At one time, I used moth flakes (or mashed moth balls) near the fence/gates/trash containers and had no problem with skunks or other critters visiting my yard. I've also heard perfume is an excellent skunk repellent. There is an electrical unit (also runs on batteries) that emits a high pitched sound (that most of us cannot hear) and most animals will not go within a few hundred feet of it. I have one in front and one in the back of my house and no animals have been in my yard since. They measure about 6" x 10". There are also small units for indoors that plug into the wall outlets (about the size of a night light) and they keep mice and insects out. The outdoor units cost between $40 and $70 and are available on line. I bought mine at Home Depot. My apologies if I sound like a commercial, but these units really do work. Hope this helps.
