Who was it a year or so ago that had this problem with one of her dogs. I remember the situation vividly because it was at the exact same time that we had a skunk fall into a window well. We tried to put a stick down so that it could escape safely but accidentally scared it. No more needs to be said here.
My brother scrubbed out the window well with bleach and other cleaners and such but of course that wouldn't be appropriate for a live animal.
I seem to recall that all the suggestions about tomato juice and such weren't all that effective but there was a product available at places like Petco or Pets Mart that will do the job well. Unfortunately though these things seem to happen at night when the stores are closed. You might see if there is an emergency vet open that you can call and see if they have some of the shampoo. Otherwise you might want to leave the dog out for the night, IF IT IS SAFE in your area. I know in our area with Coyotes around small dogs shouldn't be left out at night unless in a pen or run.
Memory might be coming back, I think it was Jill? that had the problem with a miniture type collie or something like that. Sheltie maybe?
Last year we had a second encounter, again in a window well. That is one of the most nasty experiences that one could ever have. The skunk fell in and couldn't get out. Everything was OK though. We didn't want a repeat of the year before so we waited to call Animal Control rather than risk scaring the animal ourselves. The warden came out and only solution was his .22. One shot and no smell??? Every thing was fine until there was a nervous twitch from the skunk and we all ran for our lives.
It took about 3 months for the worst of the smell to subside. Now almost exactly, maybe a little longer actually, than a year later I still sensed a little of the smell when I went down there the other day.
I don't know where you live, but in my area we are being taken over by Skunks. They seem to be everywhere and you can't go a night without smelling them somewhere near by.
I will do a quick search to see if I can find Jill's thread if it is still around.
