Fred,
I love the old photos of the way it was...THEN!! These places had some personality and decadent charm. There were smells, sweat, tobacco, whisky, there were different noises, there were characters and personalities. Winners, Losers, and the stuff Legends were made of. They still live today if folks would just seek out a bit of the history of Nevada Gaming. It is Rich and Colorful. It will make you laugh and it may make you cry.
It isn't just all dollars and cents. Sure it is great that your rare chip or ashtray is worth a ton of money. Stop and think how that great rare item made it into your hands. Where has it been, how did it get to you? I know alot of collectors regard this stuff as misplaced sentimental drivel. Well, so be it. Everyone is entitled to their own viewpoint. I just hold these objects and think, "They had to have been taken out the doors of whatever place, and then where??? Then 50 years later, here we are up for auction on Ebay, or you find one at a show.
I am going to post a postcard from 1931 that I posted before. It is from Reno...It is a shot of Virginia Street...light snow on the ground...Everything bright and shiny in the darkness. Take a look and wonder what it would have been like to take a stroll down V Street on this evening in 1931. Look at the car driving off leaving tracks, look at it all...It is a BEAUTY!!!
That is what it used to be all about...
Thanks for loving the history, Fred,
Mark
