They used the same basic card counting strategy used by others, but their success came from working as a team. Each person played a role and they even wore disguises and makeup. One guy would sit at a table and count and then signal another player when the count was favorable. The person playing the big bettor would then move in and bet heavily, whereas the original card counter would continue to bet conservatively, or leave the table completely and let the big better continue the count. They mixed their roles up and changed their plan of attack often too.
