Interesting. I wonder if they had a series of those cards. We have a similar card, with a different message. I had assumed ours was a "special" one, issued during the war or for Veterans Day or some occasion honoring our soldiers.
It's long, but here's how it starts:
THOSE
This in remembrance of men who sleep
Before their time in a distant foreign land;
Their hearts filled with secrets eternally to keep
Alone, in their last rest from ruthless bands.
To all who fired or hurled grenade or steel,
And wrought destruction, then wounded could leave the field."
There's 3 more verses, and the final verse:
"A memoriam to those men now gathered on the shore
Of a long sandy beach, beneath the rustling palm,
Dog tags on crosses, row after row, names of men who fight no more.
They nobly fought, now peacefully sleep, during jungles calm.
Those a short time ago our friends, now only dust,
Cry payment for their lives, remember their trust.
T.J. HORNE, Capt. Inf.
(In remembrance of those who fought in the Salamau Campaign, New Guinea.)"
