It's my understanding that all of the designs you see on the chip surface are actually raised portions of a slug underneath.... like a die that is then filled (injected) with the base color of the chip.

Liken the process to recessed areas on a coin that are filled with colored liquid plastic. All of the raised devices on the white or colored slug underneath of the chip show through the colored liquid plastic that is leveled off in the voids.
