Reading some of the threads here lately and seeing the overwhelming attention that is being paid online, on TV and in the papers about the worm that is going on I decided to start getting things updated to protect my system.
Yesterday when I signed on to AOL I received an AOL Warning screen upon sign on that informed me about getting patches from MS etc. I saw articles in this mornings paper and there has been something on the start up page on AOL with an ugly picture of a big green worm.
Anyways, Last night I renewed my NAV Subscription and this morning did the Live Update and updated the Virus Definitions and other updates to NAV as well as Norton Personal Security (?) (Firewall). With all that done I then restarted my computer and got the little bubble at the bottom about auto updates to software. I figured, Why Not. I configured the feature to alert me when new updates are available and when I got finished, about 3 or 4 minutes later got a notice that Microsoft had an upgrade package for IE 6. The package mentioned something about holes in the security that would allow outside users to get into your system and run your computer from outside. Even if you weren't using the IE program as your primary browser. One example they mentioned was to run their homepage through your computer(?).
Anyways, I was just wondering, from those of you are experienced with these matters, if that is all the action that I need to take. Was that upgrade from MS the "Patches" that have been mentioned? Should I be able to take a sigh of relief that I am now as protected as I can be?
All I have to do now is run the AV program and do a scan of my system. I started earlier and had to stop it. Nothing came up at that point.
Once I am done with that I am going to backup my most recent email files and photos and such that haven't been backed up yet.
Going to sign off now and run the full scan and hope that everything here is clean.
Thanks for any advice or input.
