I believe that those silver hot stamps started out gold. I've never seen a silver hot stamp on that type of chip that held up to close scrutiny. First off, I've never seen one that looked new, but even if it was nice & strong, I have always been able to find traces of the gold in the serifs with a good magnifying glass.
