Seriously, my question wasn't meant to pick nits. But I chair a Club committee - Standards and Archives - which is trying to come up with adequate definitions of some of our commonly-accepted collectibles. Howdy Herz, whose article appeared in "Casino Chip and Token News" a few issues ago, would call this an "unlicensed club."
I'm not sure that illegal and unlicensed are the same thing, though. By your reply, it seems that the club these chips came from may or may not be "illegal" in the strict sense of the word, but it does seem to be "unlicensed," and perhaps even properly called a "private club," since admission is on an invitation-only basis.
Does that sound right?
