June 18, 2003 - Las Vegas - The Stratosphere Casino Hotel and Tower is partnering with amusement industry leader Interactive Rides of Logan, Utah to create the ultimate extreme thrill ride, temporarily named Project X Sky. With an anticipated opening of early fall 2003, Project X Sky will rank worldwide as one of the most intense themed attractions. The thrill ride will send riders over the edge of the Stratosphere Tower's Outdoor Observation Deck almost 900 feet above the Las Vegas Strip, announced Stratosphere officials.
"Project X Sky is truly a new generation of extreme thrill ride. A Project X Sky passenger is the type of person who wants to see if they can handle the intensity of literally going over the edge," said Bobby Ray Harris, senior vice president of operations at the Stratosphere Casino Hotel and Tower. "Project X Sky will play upon the passenger's primal fear of falling before pulling them back from over the edge. Basically it's controlled chaos," Harris added.
Project X Sky consists of an open, floorless vehicle that holds eight passengers in "escape proof" seats. The vehicle is attached to a pivoting track that propels the passenger vehicle over the edge of the Stratosphere Tower at 30 miles per hour. The vehicle will travel approximately 27 feet over the edge. Riders will experience free-fall maneuvers while racing back and forth repeatedly from the edge. Project X Sky is fully programmable with varying degrees of intensity. An unobstructed view of the world-famous Las Vegas Strip rewards those riders brave enough to ride Project X Sky.
"Project X Sky is yet another one-of-kind attraction added to the Stratosphere, which has become known for having a variety of unique amenities and experiences at great values," stated Harris. Project X Sky has generated some interest from corporations seeking naming rights, which could result in the ultimate extreme sponsorship opportunity in Las Vegas.
"Having ridden the Stratosphere's Big Shot and High Roller, I have experienced firsthand how being 900 feet in the air can make these rides extraordinarily thrilling. With the ability to actually dangle riders 900 feet above the ground, Project X Sky should prove to be insane, and give roller coaster enthusiasts and thrill seekers another reason to visit the Stratosphere," said Bill Linkenheimer, past president, American Coaster Enthusiasts.
Project X Sky will be the world's third highest thrill ride. The Stratosphere's Big Shot thrill ride and High Roller roller coaster are the first and second highest respectively.
Project X Sky is designed and manufactured by Interactive Rides, Inc., an amusement ride engineering and manufacturing company located in Logan, Utah. Key management of Interactive Rides, Inc. were involved in the design and construction of the popular "Big Shot" ride on the Stratosphere Tower, opened to the public in 1996.
