As previously posted the New York Court of Appeals declared the pact with the Mohecan Indians (Upstate NY by the Canadian border) invalid because it was not approved by the N.Y. Legislature--just the then Governor. The same problem exists with the pact that enabled Turning Stone to go forward and a second suit pends alleging that this casino is illegally operating. Assuming that this is correct, there are problems to be resolved. The legislature is drawing to a rapid close; hardly time for a new compact to be prepared. The State can hardly try to shut down the two casinos (particularly Turning Stone which has championship golf courses & a second new hotel being built among other multi million dollar things. The Senecas near Buffalo are in operation and apparently legal; the state is engaged in negotiation with several tribes for casinos in the Monticello area; and there are huge Indian land claims to be resolved, by trial or negiation. Should be interesteing.
