I used to go there for a month or more twice a year when I was an AUSA. There was illegal gambling in a couple of the bars--just black jack except on the holidays (Day's of '76) and when the Elks had their State Convention there--out came the slots. But the big fire brought some unneeded attention to the open bordellos (national coverage as the girls of Deadwood were heroines in the fire) and the then SD AG shut them down; he later became an AUSA with me and we would patronize the illegal gambling joints that were still left. Anyway it was good news that Deadwood went legitimate and better news that I was no longer working there.
