I agree with you entirely on the writing on the backs of the cards. aFor msome reason, i think it gives it a deeper history. It's now not just a blank fresh card, but rather a card that someone bought while there, and fiulled it out and sent it. Often times it gives a special connection and makes it almost come alive.
