Thanks for the memories guys, it made for wonderful reminiscing. Interestingly enough, I got to enjoy a piece of the good old days about 7 years ago when I took a bank managers position in a small prairie town in central Saskatchewan. Total population including the area farmers 600 people. We were 1 hour from a semi large (12,000, yes 12,000 not 120,000 people) center. I recall driving into the town for the first time fresh from big city life shaking my head in disbelief when the town's single real estate person stopped in the middle of the street as my car alarm activated and beeped. He got a look of total confusion, turned looked at the car, then at me, and slowly, wide eyed said.....your car....its beeping at you....what does that mean? Rent for my 2 bedroom apartment was $225, and was straight out of the 1950's complete with the round one door fridge with icebox and matching range! No one locked their doors, people used to leave the keys in their vehicles(unlocked of course) in case their neighbors or friends needed it in a pinch, there were 2 privately owned grocery/general stores,a drugstore and a few other small independent stores; there was a weekly function at the sportsplex and it was always topped off with a concession full of homemade food donated on a rotational basis by the townspeople and sold cheaply to help cover the costs of the sportsplex operating, and everyone said hello and took the time to talk and visit. Kids played in the street, and everyone took turns helping the seniors. Just like a Norman Rockwell print. Sigh, those were the days. Then some young transient punks held up the gas station on the highway, blew away the owner and his wife, stole a truck from town and things were never the same. Curse modern times.
