You're also correct in your implication that my question wasn't very well worded! grin

Because Pete's answer ...

... is also correct. The "hit by a batted ball" rule by its terms does not apply if a fielder has touched the ball or if the ball has passed an infielder and no other fielder has a fair chance of making a play on it (a judgment call which could still result in the runner being called out, though it is not automatic).
