You will be searching for new drivers, I guarentee it. Some hardware, printers come to mind if you have an older one, some other cards, do not have support or drivers for anything past 98.

I upgraded a NT4 computer to NT5 and then to 2000, and found it was so "scrod" that I just wiped the C drive and installed 2000. Amazing. I got all kinds of space back and it stopped crasing and is just a breeze to work with.

For some reason, upgrading gives most computers a bad hangover, which includes twitching behavior, sudden crashes and default errors. While the same computer, with a fresh install of the identical software, will run smooth.

You might as well just buy a new computer, which will come with the operating system, and will be less headaches. You can network the two and dump everything to want to save, into the new system.

Oh yes, the real message in this message. If you decide to upgrade, make sure you have a back-up and check the back-up to make sure it's a working back-up, before you do anything.

I shouldn't talk about new computers, because my newest is a $99 Pentium 300 that I bought bare bones at a computer show.

If your system, running 98 is working, and runs the software you need, there's no reason to upgrade. If you wish to make your system better, or spend some money, buy more memory. That's like giving candy to a baby... Your computer will perk up and be very responsive. Lack of memory is one of the biggest causes of problems for home users.
