I use a hair dryer or heat gun to heat the chip. When it gets soft, use your hand to press it down on a flat surface. This works on most but not all chips. I wouldn't us an iron as you may disturb the surface texture of the clay.
I've also heard that microwaving a chip wrapped in a moist paper towel will work to heat it, but it's the pressure while cooling that does the flattening.
