I guess I may have been dimly aware that Kling had another book out but I was nevertherless surprised to find this at the Nat'l Automobile Museum in Reno. Published by University of Nevada Oral History Program 1999 and edited by R.T.King. You gotta have this Kling book too! Dwayne interviews people who worked or were associated with William Harrah and his empire. I've read two interviews and they are great for any Reno/Taho/Nevada/Casino history wonk. Kling started dealing in Reno at Harolds Club and is a contempary to the time he covers with the interviewees. Kling continued to progress in the industry working for Harrah's Tahoe as pit manager, co-owner of the Silver Spur and retiring as casino manager of The Virginian Hotel and Casino.
Consider what a pleasant day this turned out to be, I found the Nat'l Automobile Museum and this book. After visiting L. Tahoe I find myself sitting at one of Sharkey's chip-embedded tables for dinner. Later that night I crack open
Every Light Was On and the first interview is Milos "Sharkey" Begovich! Sharkey was working for Harrah in Tahoe and had a real gambling problem that led him to
take money from Harrah's vault during his work shift and go across the street to Harvey's and play. Inevitably he lost too much to cover up and Harrah let him pay it back... until it happened for the third time. Great story of Sharkey's California days, his
two stints working for Bill Harrah and Sharkey's time in Gardnerville. Kling's insider status lets him prod for extra info and jog memories. Second chapter is James Casselli... everything you ever wanted to know about slots and how and why they are the way they are today plus the Holiday Inns takeover and you'll know more about the namesake of Harrah's Café Andreotti. Do yourself a favor and hunt down this book, it's as good as any $25 chip you can come up with!
Here's a close-up of the poor detail on Bill's chip hoard! Hubs and small keys?
