One type, the dice crystallize. It usually starts in the corners and can go through the whole die. Coating these dice with a clear acrylic nail lacquer will slow down the decomposition.
We've had dice that were so crystallized that bits would crumble off when you touched them. After coating them (yes, I coat dice), they could be handled without further crumbling. (Handled...but not put into play on a craps table!)
The dice in the attached photo are all suffering from "vinegar syndrome". You can see that some have lost spots, some are "shrinking", the spots are turning yellow, etc. I tried coating some of them....no luck, they just got sticky (although when I got them out tonight, they didn't seem as sticky as in the past). These dice do need to be kept away from any others, as exposure can hasten the decomposition of other dice made of the same material.
