Bummer Terry!
All four of my laptops have been Toshiba. They are just plain durable little machines. When working the drag races, we have a Toshiba laptop that we use as a network server, ethernet into it to share and store data. That laptop gets packed up in a suitcase and loaded in the sanctioning body's media services truck to go to the next race.
The only problems I've ever had were not the machine's fault. I yanked the power cord out of the back of one at a wrong angle, broke the connection on the motherboard. I fixed that myself. ...there's a bunch of really tiny screws holding these things together that you have to remove to get to the motherboard... The other two times involved soda being spilled on the keyboards. Those are fairly easy to replace.
