"It's quite tiresome that both you and Pete paint conservatives as rascists."
Please show me where I've done that? I do believe that certain conservative policies or beliefs are racist in nature -- profiling, accepting a death penalty that disproportionately executes black criminals over whites, wanting the COnfederate flag to hang on public buildings (I also view this as treasonous). I do not think that most who support these are "racist" in that they think whites superior to other races. I believe, however, that living in a society that has historically discriminated along racial lines, all Americans pick up certain subconcious racist tendencies. If you are white, you will cross dark the street more quickly if two young black men are walking towards yu than if two white men are walking towards you. If you are black, you will harbor subconscious anti-white feelings.
And it ain't just Americans. If you are an Arab who has seen his home demolished by IDF forces to make room for Israeli settlers, you will harbor underlying anti-Jewish feelings. If you are a jew who walks in fear of a suicide bombing, you will eye every Arab suspiciously.
The only way for individuals to help society overcome its inherent racist policies (see above), is for each of us to at least recognize the subconscious racist tendencies in our own hearts, and then ask whether we've relied on them to form certain political opinions.
BTW- leftists like myself harbor similar unreasonable prejudices on other grounds. I have an inherent distrust of the police. I recognize it, and realize it is wrong, and try to force myself not to ever act on it. So I FORCE myself to give all police officers the benefit of the doubt. Not easy, but it's better than giving in to prejudice. I was once very anti-military. I have overcome that as well.
