However don't forget that there were reasons why we did what we did.

If we didn't support the Afghanny freedom fighters, Russia would have rolled through the country. Would that have been good or bad. At the time it didn't appear too good. Were you in favor of allowing USSR to usurp the country?

Supporting Saddam was done to offset the fundalmentalist movement that the US feared would take over the region. This, of course, was on the heels of the fall of the Shah.
