I've responded to a lot of posts below, and I'm sure you'll read them. but I felt the need to summarize a newbie's views. There are a lot of us, and I offer just one opinion from the newcomers' ranks.
In all honesty, the board and/or editorial staff should have made some recognition to the extraordinary decision to allow an expelled member to contribute to a club publication. I don't think ANYONE objects to honoring Bruce in whatever way was deemed appropriate. I do think that the ancillary issue of allowing a popular, but expelled, member back into club business for ANY reason should rightfully bother anyone who values the integrity of the board's rulings. If those ruling are only to be inforced when popular, then they mean nothing.
There were better ways to handle it. They could have issued the magazine with a 4-page "supplement" tribute to Bruce, that was not "officially" a club publication. Or Nate or the editor could have written a preface to the issue saying that the board felt that tributes to Bruce were of such a value to this hobby that they voted to ignore normal regulations in order to properly honor him. Either would have recognized the extraordinary circumstances of Bruce's death, and the willingness to "let it slide" in his memory.
I doubt that anyone would have minded such a decision. It's the mark of true leadership in the face of tragedy. I hope there won't be a next time. But if there is, I hope people weigh the integrity of the club as equally imprtant to their emotions.
