Hey Jim,
I wish you hadn't brought all that stuff up. You're making me feel old again. As a kid I went to public school a hop skip and a jump away from the old Polo Grounds. We used to sneak down there every once in a while to see the games. As I grew older and went to high school [George Washington High] There was a Willie Mays on the high school baseball team. Truthfully I can't remember if it was his son or brother.
Years later I remember sitting in a bar looking out the window and seeing Willie Mays pull into the gas station across the street in his bright Pink Chrysler Imperial. We all ran over to get his autograph. I remember the only thing I had was a dollar bill and he graciously signed that.
The funny part as that I was a devout Dodger fan but one who never got to Ebbets Field.
Those were the days of Reese, Snider, Hodges, Robinson, Newcombe, Gilliam, Campanella and the rest of the crew. When the Dodgers moved out west, I just felt totally betrayed and lost interest in baseball.
