AZ chip tips - BEFORE you go grin

I promised a couple people I'd elaborate a little about some of the problems one can encounter if wanting to get AZ chips... so BEFORE you jump in the car and drive 4 hours to Yuma (or any AZ casino), read this:
(John? Jim? Chuck? Feel free to jump in here! grin)

Arizona card rooms are NOT open 24/7. The casinos are... but most of the poker rooms close for as many as 18 hours a day. Bucky's for example, is only open from like 5pm - midnight.
If they don't have enough players, they close early.

So before you drive to Yuma, CALL THEM. Not only to check their "typical" hours, but make sure they are going to be open the night you plan on going. One night I drove to Cliff Castle (which is a good hour) to find their poker room was closed for the night. This would be a real bummer if you were coming in from out of state.

A lot of the casinos keep "odd" denominations in the vault. Know what you want before you go - because getting a busy cardroom supervisor to sign them out in the middle of a game IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN sad
I found that getting them to retrive chips from the vault in itself is highly dependent on my attitude and their good nature. grin

Some Arizona casinos may refuse to sell you fractionals...
Some may agree to sell you some but will limit the quantity.
Some casinos may outright refuse to sell you ANYTHING.
Had a friend that went to Yuma (to get ME chips) and had a real hard time...
He first went in the morning (cardroom closed - no chips) - then back that afternoon (cardroom not open - no chips) - and eventually got some that evening. They gave him a hard time about EVERYTHING and he said he'll never go back. sad

When you tell them you're a collector, some cashiers will look at you like you're crazy - and call security. vbg (that happened to me at Gila River) rofl
I usually approach the counter with a few $1's in my hand... tuck $2 in their tip jar UPFRONT, and have a couple more sitting there to suggest an additional tip if happy. (and they get it).
I found if I TELL them I'm a collector (and I tip), they are usually quite cooperative (and security doesn't follow you around for an hour rofl ) Some places will go as far as to help you find "better" chips... or to sell you a few coveted fractionals.

But - probably once of the biggest things you can do to ensure you'll get chips, is to call one evening in advance (I'd say a week before to get the contact name of the person supervising the card room the night I'm going - and a followup to call TO THAT PERSON as soon as posisble. Then a reminder call that afternoon or the day before. These "pre-calls" have made poker supervisors VERY cooperative. Cliff Castle has gotten me uncirculated fractionals out of the vault with some "notice" (although there was a 10 or 20 chip limit)

At Bucky's, anything larger than $5 is in the vault - so if I want $10 - $100, I have to call. Most other casinos $25 and under available, but not all of them.

Chips are sold in the poker rooms only (at most places - I don't think Yuma will sell them at the cage...) so if you go at 8 am and the cardroom is closed... unless you're staying until 4 pm - 5 pm, you probably won't be able to get chips. Personally I wouldn't go to ANY AZ casino with the sole intention of getting chips unless I call first. If I'm going to hang out and play a little and DON'T call , I go between 6 pm and 10 pm.

TOURN CHIPS - have to be "harvested" like roulettes. You'd have to buy in and play in a tournament. If you get caught, they'll probably take your chips AND throw you out vbg
Active tournament chips (like the NCV's in this scan) are NOT supposed to leave the casino under ANY circumstances.

SLOTCARDS: If you want blanks - GOOD LUCK. Some casinos might give you one - but don't hold your breath! Bucky's told me that they CAN'T give blank cards (although I've gotten a rare few - being a Jackpot winner makes them a little nicer to you grin) because they think someone can take the card, and program it with credit card numbers and use it fraudulently. (HUH? oooooook! sad ) It doesn't matter what YOU think... if that's what THEY think, no cards. Most places keep all blanks securely locked up & behind a counter...
So if you WANT slot cards, I always start by asking for two in my name because I "like to play two machines if it's not busy".
THEN I ask for a couple blanks (for my kids or my friend or as a momento...). Usually they apologize and say "they can't".

So for the handful of people who emailed me, or ANYONE thinking of driving to Yuma or stopping in Phoenix for the sole purpose of getting chips, hopefully this post will save you from making the trip at the wrong time... grin
